Finally, I and Victoria attended our first HOA meeting, sort of, yesterday since we moved to this seniors-oriented neighborhood in Jeffersontown, KY last October. It was actually a potluck event, but we instead brought our appetite with us to the gathering. Mostly grey-haired senior citizens in their 70s and 80s, Victoria and I were the 2nd and 3rd youngest attendees, respectively, among a group of 20 or so residents who gathered at the potluck (the youngest was actually a non-resident visitor from a  10-minute drive away--a daughter-in-law of a head organizer of the event named Debbie.

We were gregarious, exchanged names /  pleasantries, personal stories and updated information with others. The food was excellent to top it off; I promised, "This won't be our last time!" As we were leaving, I turned to Dorothy, one of daily joggers we happened to catch passing by our very house on regular basis, always in company of her husband of 40+ years, Bill, their protective canine companion, a small toy breed named Bella I believe, and said, "Hey Dottie, please say a hi to Bill for me." Dottie immediately blurted out "what?", but her voice sounded hoarse and as if in protest. It didn't sound right.

Bill unfortunately passed away a few weeks ago after having a sudden episode of a massive brain hemorrhage. An ambulance took him to ER, but they just could not resuscitate him back to life. "We just saw him, and Bill and I exchanged jokes just a few weeks ago..I am so sorry. We didn't know.."

As we walked back to our home after consoling Dottie, our hearts felt crestfallen, heavy and very sad. Bill and Dottie are the first new neighbors we met after moving to this community 1.5 years ago. And just how fantastic people they are!! Their three daughters and a dozen or so grandkids got to see Bill before he died..

I will miss Bill,  his somewhat quirky sense of humor, and just our conversation.  When we last met Dottie and Bill three weeks ago when Bill was still alive, Dottie said, "How come everyone knows that you go to seminary, but not us?" That sounded somewhat odd, but I didn't think too much about it until now. I wonder why she said that. But in my ear "he is waiting to see me,' is still ringing...I could have done more and better in retrospect...for sure..
