19일 새벽 화장을 짙게 한 여장 지휘관(리을설)은 아지트에서 참모들과 함께 어제 작전 분석한 결과를 놓고 오늘 실시할 작전계획에 대해 의논하고 있었다. 계획대로 갑자기 김대중 동지가 구속되었지만 예상치 못하게 그 조직원들도 잡혀 들어가거나 도주해 김대중 쪽 조직원들의 동원에 차질이 생겨 작전 시간이 변경되거나 취소되는 경우가 발생해 이 부분에 대하여 책임 조장에게 질책하고 비판을 했지만, 책임 조장은 오전에만 좀 문제가  있었고, 시간이 지나면서 연락에는 문제가 없다고 해서 불안감은 좀 덜했다. (p.41)

오늘은 아주 중요한 작전이 실시되는데 그 작전의 주축이 바로 김대중 조직원들이 동원되어서 나주에서 폭동을 일으키고 광주에서 가장 가까운 위치에 있는 나주 예비군 대대 무기고를 습격해 무기 보유량 1,700정 전부와 실탄과 폭발물까지 모두 다 탈취해 무장하는 것이었다. 이어서 광주교도소를 전격적으로 기습해 교도소를 해방시킨 후, 교도소 수감자들도 무장시켜 광주 시내로 들어와 광주를 해방구로 만들어야 하는 결정적인 작전을 성공적으로 완수시켜야만 하는 그런 작전이었다. 교도소에서 근무하는 김대중 여단 조직원들과도 모두 다 연락이 되어 있어 만반의 준비를 하고 있다는 점이 믿음을 주긴 했지만, 김대중 여단쪽 상황이 점점 불길하게 느껴지기만 했다.

광주시내 작전도 어제는 광주시민들을 수세에 몰리게 해 주민들을 격분시키는데 충분하지는 않았지만 성공적으로 작전을 마쳤다는 자평을 하였다.  오늘부터는 공세적으로 전환해서 진압 공수부대를 도청으로 몰아넣고, 저녁 무렵 광주교도소가 해방이 되고, 무장한 시위대들을 앞세워 광주를 해방시켜야 하는 막중한 임무 때문에 모두들 무거운 표정의 얼굴을 하고 있었다. (pp. 41-43)
